In the largest-ever institutional fundraising drive undertaken by any Indian Institute of Technology, IIT Kanpur officially unveiled its flagship campaign, ‘Greater Than Us’, at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. Aiming to raise US$1 billion (approx. ₹8,300+ crore) by March 2029, the campaign has secured an unprecedented ₹4,155 crore—nearly half its total target—prior to launch through commitments from alumni, philanthropists, industry leaders, and government stakeholders.
The campaign was inaugurated by Union Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh, marking a transformative moment for higher technical education and indigenous R&D infrastructure in India.

Key Highlights at a Glance
- Target: US$1 Billion by March 2029 (Largest fundraising initiative across the IIT system).
- Initial Commitments: ₹4,155 crore already secured across foundational and frontier domains.
- Anchor Gift: ₹180 crore committed by alumnus Rahul Gautam to establish the Gautam School of Innovation & Entrepreneurship (G-SINE) at the Noida campus.
- Three Strategic Pillars: Foundation (₹5,000 Cr), Talent (₹3,000 Cr), and Frontier (₹1,000 Cr target; ₹1,556 Cr already committed).
Deep-Tech Entrepreneurship: G-SINE at Noida Campus
A central milestone of the launch was the formalization of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with alumnus Rahul Gautam, who pledged ₹180 crore to establish the Gautam School of Innovation & Entrepreneurship (G-SINE) at IIT Kanpur’s Noida extension center.
Scheduled to commence operations in July 2027, G-SINE will host dedicated full-time faculty and specialized degree pathways, headlined by an MBA in Technology & Entrepreneurship. Designed to interface directly with the proposed Deep Tech Hub and IIT Kanpur’s startup incubator, the Startup Incubation and Innovation Centre (SIIC)—which has supported over 571 startups—G-SINE will focus on incubating tech-driven founders in sectors such as:
- Artificial Intelligence & Cybersecurity
- Semiconductor Design & Advanced Manufacturing
- Biotechnology & Digital Health
- Unmanned Aerial Systems (Drones)
| Pillar | Allocation / Target | Core Objectives & Capital Projects |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation | ₹5,000 Crore | •• ₹524 Cr Central Research Facility: Includes a ₹160 Cr clean-room semiconductor processing center and advanced spectroscopy/microscopy labs.• ₹200 Cr High-Performance Computing (HPC): GPU-accelerated clusters for AI and scientific modeling.• Campus Expansion: Four new 1,000-capacity residence halls (first delivery by June 2027), 96 faculty housing units, and a dedicated Centre for Mental Health & Wellbeing. |

Translational Research in Action
The ‘Frontier’ vertical builds upon an existing track record of institutional technology deployment:
Governance: IIT Kanpur’s indigenous AI stack powers the Union Government’s centralized grievance system, CPGRAMS.
Critical Infrastructure: Institutional cybersecurity teams currently operate the dedicated Security Operations Centre (SOC) safeguarding the Bhilai Steel Plant.
Defence & Aerospace: Faculty-incubated spin-offs have developed deployable tactical systems, including heavy-payload logistics platforms and autonomous strike drones.
Industry Outlook
By shifting the university funding model toward large-scale endowment capitalization and lab-to-market translational research, IIT Kanpur’s campaign sets a new precedent for higher education financing in India, mirroring global benchmarks established by institutions such as MIT and Stanford.
